Incoming exchange students

Once we have received the nomination, we will contact the nominated students and send information about the appliation process and a link to our electronic application form. Complete application forms need to be submitted online before the deadline, including an official academic transcript and a proof of language skills if available.

• You need to be a registered student at one of our partner universities and there is a valid exchange agreement between your home university and the Department of Political Science at Stockholm University for the intended exchange period.
• You need to be nominated by the exchange co-ordinator at your home university before deadline.
• You have studied a minimum of 1 year / 60 credits at university level.

Nominated students are expected to be highly proficient in English (spoken and written) in order to have a successful learning experience. We recommend exchange students to have a result of at least 550 points (paper-based test) or 213 points (computer-based test) on the TOELF-test. An official language test is not required, if your home university can proof your language proficiency.

Students that have documentet proficiency in Swedish are welcome to apply for courses in Swedish.

You need to be registered student at graduate level at your home university and hold a bachelors degree with a major in political science or any other related field of studies.

To study Political Science II incoming exchange students must have previously completed political science courses worth 30 ECTS, roughly corresponding to the course parts in Political Science I at Stockholm University.

To study Political Science III exchange students must have previously completed political science courses of 60 ECTS roughly corresponding to the course parts in Political Science I and II at Stockholm University. The number of places available on Political Science III is limited.

If there is no valid exchange agreement between your home university and Stockholm University, you will have to apply as a regular student electronically through
www.universityadmissions.se.

Information on studies at Stockholm University for international students can be found at www.su.se/english/study. Please note that the Department of Political Science cannot grant any exemptions from the general entrance requirements at Stockholm University.

Exchange students at the Department of Political Science should submit an official transcript of records together with the online-application.

Since the Department of Political Science will be your host department at Stockholm University, you will, in generall, take the majority of your credits (3-4 courses per semester, or 22.5 to 30 ECTS credits) at our department.

If there are no courses available for you at the Department of Political Science during a certain period, you may enquire as to whether it is possible to study courses at other departments. However, departments at Stockholm University are not obliged to accept exchange students from other departments at the university but do so only if there are places available in their courses and if the students have the necessary qualifications. Usually the Co-ordinators do not know until after the registration period at the start of the semester whether or not there will be places available for specific courses.

Please note that the Department of Political Science can only accept exchange students from other departments if there are places available and if the students have the necessary qualifications (transcript of records is required).

The academic year is divided into two twenty-week semesters: Autumn Semester (end of August/beginning of September to mid-January) and Spring Semester (mid-January to the beginning of June).

A full-time student is expected to complete 30 credits per semester.

The three undergraduate levels are divided into course parts. Most departments, including the Dept. of Political Science, expect students to complete these course parts in sequence. The number of credits constituting a course part is related to the estimated workload required: 1.5 credits is equivalent to one week of full-time study (40 hours). Hence, a course of 7.5 credits requires five weeks of full-time studies.

At the Department of Political Science the semester is divided into 4 periods of 5 weeks each, corresponding to one course part of 7.5 credits.

Stockholm University rents and manages furnished rooms and apartments which are owned by other landlords in Stockholm. These are available to international students at Stockholm University.
