Doctoral (PhD) studies

As a PhD student you will be trained in the scientific way of thinking, both critically and analytically. During your studies you will undertake independent problem solving with the choice of right methods, as well as gain research ethical awareness.

PhD studies usually take four years to complete. If combined with teaching responsibilities or other work assignments, the study period can be extended. PhD studies consist of coursework, research, and completing a doctoral dissertation. After defending your dissertation and meeting all other requirements, you are awarded a doctoral degree.

PhD studies at the Department of Slavic and Baltic Studies, Finnish, Dutch and German are carried out in four main subject areas: Slavic languages, Baltic languages, Finnish, and German.

In order to be admitted to doctoral studies, one must be qualified and have some form of funding. Doctoral studies are generally funded by the department, but other forms of funding are also possible, such as stipends and special external projects.

Vacancies for doctoral studies are normally announced twice a year on the Stockholm University home page (PhD Student Positions), and are dependent upon the number of fully funded, available doctoral positions at the department. Application deadlines are 15 April and 15 October, and the available positions are announced one month before the deadline.

Doctoral studies are regulated by a general study plan and an individual study plan. The general study plans (in Swedish, last updated 2020) for the four majors taught at the department are listed below:

After being selected and admitted to doctoral studies at the department, the PhD student is appointed a main supervisor and a co-supervisor. An individual study plan is set up — coursework, research and writing periods, including teaching and/or other responsibilities, are allocated throughout the whole study period. The individual study plan is reviewed annually, and study progress is documented in a follow-up form.
