Incoming exchange students

This page is for incoming exchange students at the Department of Sociology.

How to participate in our exchange programmes

Agreements with the Department of Sociology

Exchange students are nominated by their home universities. Your home university has to have a partner agreement with the Department of Sociology or Stockholm University for you to be able to come and study here as an exchange student. Please contact your home university and ask about the application process and deadlines.

University-wide agreements

If you are applying for exchange studies through Stockholm University's university-wide agreements, you will find all relevant information on the University's central website for incoming exchange students.

The study system

Normal course length

Courses at Stockholm University normally carry 7.5, 15 or 30 ECTS credits. You can choose four 7.5-ECTS credit courses, or two 15-ECTS credits courses, or any other combination.

Full time study

One week of full-time study equals 1.5 ECTS credits. The workload is 40 hours per week. This includes lectures, readings, assignments, seminars and independent studies. You may register for a total of 30 ETCS credits plus a Swedish language course each term

Exams

There is no fixed examination period at the end of each term. This means that most exams are held during the last week of each course.

Courses

How to select courses

You need to apply for courses through the exchange coordinator at your home university. Online applications on our website are not open for exchange students.

Before you select courses, make sure that:

  • you meet the requirements for each course, and
  • the course is offered during the term of your planned exchange studies.

Courses at the Department of Sociology

Most of our courses at the Department of Sociology are offered at a half-time workload and carry 7.5 ETC-credits. We recommend you to take two courses in period A-B and two courses in period C-D. Please note that you will not be able to write your thesis within your exchange studies.

Courses at other departments

It is possible to study at other departments, even if you are an exchange student through one of the agreements with the Department of Sociology. To be able to do that, you will need to meet the course requirements. Additionally, the department offering the course has to give their approval.

For inquires about courses at other departments, contact the international coordinator at the Department of Sociology, who will then email the department in question.

Please note that schedule conflicts may occur.

Housing

The Housing Office

Stockholm University tries to assist exchange students with accommodation. The Housing Office manages a limited number of corridor rooms and studio apartments in Stockholm. Please note that they cannot guarantee accommodation for all exchange students.

If you are not offered housing

We strongly recommend you to look for other accommodation possibilities as soon as you are accepted as an exchange student since it is very difficult to find accommodation in Stockholm.
