The international student exchange programmes give you the opportunity to spend part of your training at one of Stockholm University’s many partner universities in Europe.

Checklist

  • Apply for a scholarship – if available in your exchange program

You do not have to pay tuition fees at the university you are traveling to.

Europe

You can travel within Europe via the Department of Sociology's own agreements. We have several collaborations within the Erasmus+ program.

You can also travel via Civis Erasmus+, which is open to all students at Stockholm University.

It is also possible to travel for a shorter stay via Civis – European Civic University Alliance.

When you study as an exchange student through Erasmus+, you are exempt from tuition fees at the host university, and you will also receive a grant.

To be eligible to participate in Erasmus+ student mobility you must fulfil the following requirements (in addition to the language requirements already stated):

  • Have completed at least a year of full-time studies at higher education level (60 credits) before departure for Erasmus+ studies.
  • Be a registered and active student at Stockholm University, where you intend to graduate (students on study leave are not eligible).
  • Study full time at the host university for a minimum of 90 days or do full-time work at an eligible organization for a minimum of 60 days, but no more than 360 days per education cycle (Bachelor, Master, or PhD level).
  • Not have participated in Erasmus+ mobility before during the same study cycle in a way that the total mobility period exceeds 360 days (including both previous and planned mobility).
  • Have a signed Learning Agreement before departure.
  • Take a language assessment (OLS).
  • Submit Arrival Certificate, Certificate of Attendance and Erasmus+ Participant Report during and after the mobility.
  • Not accept any other scholarships from the EU or the Swedish Council for Higher Education at the same time.

Students who are selected and nominated as Erasmus+ participants and meet the requirements must submit an online form in the Erasmus+ portal and may apply for an Erasmus+ mobility grant.

How to apply

With your application, you must include a personal letter of motivation in English, addressed to the Department of Sociology. Describe your choice of university, how it relates to your current studies, how you are a good ambassador for your department/university, and why you want to participate in the exchange. Explain how you hope the experience will help you grow both academically and on a personally. You must only write one letter regardless of how many universities you apply to. You must also make a preliminary course selection and attach a transcript of your previous studies.

Do you want to study abroad without spending a whole semester away? The CIVIS Alliance, in which Stockholm University participates, offers several short-term courses for students who wish to study at one or more partner universities in Europe.

CIVIS-courses

  • are free of charge for CIVIS students (with some exceptions for fee-paying students)
  • provide the opportunity to apply for funding for the trip and accommodation (application at the home university)

Financing: CIVIS-grant

Stockholm University is part of the CIVIS – European Civic University Alliance. CIVIS is an alliance within Erasmus+ that includes eight universities in total. 

All students at Stockholm University, regardless of subject or level, can apply for Erasmus+ exchange studies within the CIVIS alliance.

All students offered a place through CIVIS can apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship.

Application period

You can always apply for exchange studies in the autumn semester via the department's bilateral agreements and within Erasmus+. The application opens on January 15 and closes on February 15.

Sometimes there are places available in the spring. In that case, the application will open on August 15 and close on September 15.

Northern Europe, USA and Canada

You can travel to the northern European countries via the Nordlys Erasmus+ and north2north programs. North2north also includes universities in the USA and Canada.

north2north is a network within the University of the Arctic, in which universities and colleges around the Arctic Circle cooperate.

Duration and destinations

The student exchange programme offers scholarships and placements for one or two semesters at one of the programme's partner universities in the United States (Alaska), Canada, Russia, Iceland, Finland and Norway. Students can apply for a north2north scholarship through the Swedish Institute. 

Who can apply?

All students at Stockholm University, regardless of subject, can apply to north2north. However, students who study courses with an emphasis on the Northern and Arctic regions are prioritised.

If you want to study outside Europe, you can apply to one of Stockholm University’s partner universities in North America, South America, Africa, Asia, or Australia.

Studies within the central exchange agreements are not limited to any particular subject.
