Deaf Education in the Nordic Countries (DENC)
Deaf Education in the Nordic Countries (DENC) is a research seminar based at Stockholm University that brings together scholars, educators, interpreters, and community members engaged in deaf education across the Nordic region.
The seminar provides a collaborative space for discussing pedagogical practices, ongoing research projects, emerging themes in the field, manuscripts in progress, and education initiatives related to the preparation and professional development of teachers, interpreters, and other practitioners working with deaf and hard of hearing students as well as hearing students and their families.
DENC places particular emphasis on language, culture, and collaboration, foregrounding the central role of signed languages, linguistic access, and equity in education. The seminar is committed to advancing linguistic human rights for deaf and hard of hearing learners across the Nordic countries, ensuring that research and practice contribute to educational environments where all students have full access to meaningful communication, participation, and learning.
Ableism, Linguicism and Swedish Sign Language in Government Documentation
The film presents the study’s main findings in International Sign Language. The researchers describe how sign language has been represented in government documents, the consequences this may have for the rights of sign language users, and why stronger legal protection for Swedish Sign Language is an important issue.
