Regionalism in a changing global political economy:

The panel participants analyze the relationship between political economy and regionalism, in the light of changes in the global system. From the ‘new regionalism’ in the framework of ‘globalization’ and neo-liberal oriented global outlooks, to current regional outlooks linked to ‘nearshoring’ with state-centric aims, for control of markets, natural resources and supply chains. 

A point of departure for the presentation is that regionalism, through economic integration and cooperation among neighbouring states, has profound implications for the political, social, and economic shaping of regional and global systems. Another is that there is a diversity of contributions and experiences in different regions of the world, which make it necessary to explore the relation between regionalism and the emergence of a new multipolar world order. The focus of the presentations are in the cases of North America, with the connection between United States, Mexico and Canada; in South America, with focus on Brazil, the MERCOSUR and their global relations; and in Africa, where regional organizations, initiatives and global connections are in a process of change.
