At a Language Cafe, you can practice language skills and cultural understanding in a relaxed setting together with others who know or are learning the cafe’s language. Basic knowledge of the target language is necessary.

We offer all participants coffee or tea.

The cafes are led by volunteer coordinators. The coordinators are not language teachers, but regular students.

The Language Cafes are open to all students and staff at the following universities:

  • Stockholm University
  • All CIVIS universities
  • Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, South Korea
  • Leipzig University, Germany
  • Osaka University, Japan
  • Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico
  • University of Thessaly, Greece (Spring 2026)

Alumni from Stockholm University can also sign up by emailing info@sprakstudion.su.se.

You are welcome to participate on a regular basis or drop in spontaneously. The language cafes are a complement to your more formal classes and participation generates no course credits. We don't save the information of your presence at the language cafe.

On Campus

The Language Cafes are held in the Language Studio’s premises:
Södra Huset, building E, floor 2.

Register at the Language Studio reception before the Cafe.

Via Zoom

The Zoom meeting room opens approximately 10 minutes before the Language Cafe begins. You will first enter a waiting room. Please feel free to use a headset.

What does a coordinator do?

Leading a cafe does not entail teaching a language – it is about contributing with your language to other students' informal learning. Becoming a coordinator means engaging yourself in student life and sharing your knowledge of your language while you support others in their language learning.

The basic tasks of a coordinator are to:

  • Provide topics and get the conversations started
  • Make sure that conversations are flowing smoothly
  • Try to make sure that all participants are included
  • Ask and answer questions

Coordinators are expected to:

  • Join the meeting room five minutes before the cafe starts to check in
  • Notify Språkstudion in advance if they are unable to attend

What you get:

  • The opportunity to share your language and culture with other students
  • A chance to get to know new people and make friends
  • Experience of leading a group

Certificate

If you participate as a coordinator at least 8 times during the semester, you will receive a certificate issued by the director of the Language Studio.

Schedule

The schedule for the Language Cafes is decided at an information meeting at the beginning of the semester. The schedule is based on your availability as a coordinator.

The language Cafes are typically held once a week for each language.
