Language Cafes

Språkstudion organises Language Cafe sessions where you get the opportunity to practise languages in an informal setting, together with other students and native-level speakers. Welcome!

 

Register for this term's Language Cafes here When you have registered you are welcome to participate in all Language Cafes for the rest of the term.

N.B. If you want to join a Japanese Language Cafe, you also need to preregister per cafe, every week. Please sign up via this link. Registration for the following week's cafe opens when the previous cafe has finished. All other cafes are drop-in events.

What is a Language Cafe?

At a Language Cafe session, you practise your language skills and cultural awareness by talking to native-level speakers and other learners over a cup of coffee or tea. Språkstudion's language cafes are run by students on a volunteer basis, with no formal language teachers present. Cafe sessions allow you to practise a language you want to improve at in a relaxed environment, regardless of your current level.

The Language Cafes are open to all students and staff at the following universities:

  • Stockholm University
  • All CIVIS universities
  • Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, South Korea
  • Leipzig University, Germany
  • Osaka University, Japan
  • Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico

Alumni from Stockholm University can also sign up by emailing info@sprakstudion.su.se.

You are welcome to participate on a regular basis or drop in spontaneously. The language cafes are a complement to your more formal classes and participation generates no course credits. We don't save the information of your presence at the language cafe.

Most language cafes are held on campus in Språkstudion's rooms at Stockholm University. Språkstudion is located in Södra Huset, house E, floor 2.
Please come by our front desk when you arrive, and we will show you to the correct room for the language cafe you want to join.

Several language cafes are also held through Zoom. To take part in a cafe session, you need to download Zoom and activate your camera and microphone. Using a headset is recommended.

The cafe meeting room in Zoom will open about 10 minutes before the start of the language cafe. When you enter the room, you will first enter the lobby. Staff from Språkstudion will then let one person in at a time and make sure that you're placed in the correct cafe group.

Each language is scheduled for one or two sessions a week. The list of cafe languages depends entirely on our current coordinators, and we are always recruiting new language cafe coordinators in as many languages as possible.

The Language Cafes are led by native-level student volunteers who function as conversational partners and language supporters. As a coordinator, you lead conversations in your language(s) and thereby support other learners at the cafes.

What does a coordinator do?

Leading a cafe does not entail teaching a language – it is about contributing with your language to other students' informal learning. Becoming a coordinator means engaging yourself in student life and sharing your knowledge of your language while you support others in their language learning.

The basic tasks of a coordinator are to:

  • Provide topics and get the conversations started
  • Make sure that conversations are flowing smoothly
  • Try to make sure that all participants are included
  • Ask and answer questions

Coordinators are expected to:

  • Join the meeting room five minutes before the cafe starts to check in
  • Notify Språkstudion in advance if they are unable to attend

What you get:

  • The opportunity to share your language and culture with other students
  • A chance to get to know new people and make friends
  • Experience of leading a group
  • If you have participated as a coordinator at least 8 sessions during the semester: a certificate issued by the director of Språkstudion.

Schedule

The schedule for the Language Cafes are set during a meeting held at the start of the semester with consideration to the availability of interested coordinators and the schedule of the language institutions. Cafes are usually held once a week per language, one hour at a time, Monday through Friday after 12pm.
