Dr. Marie Jacobsson awarded honorary doctorate by the World Maritime University
The Chair of the Stockholm Centre for International Law and Justice, Dr. Marie Jacobsson, has been awarded a Doctor of Science in Maritime Affairs honoris causa by the World Maritime University, WMU “in recognition of outstanding services to the international maritime community”.

Dr. Marie Jacobsson was the Principal Legal Adviser on International Law and Ambassador at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Stockholm, until her retirement on 1 June 2023. The focus of her work at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs was on international peace and security, law of the sea, and the law of armed conflict. She was a Member of the United Nations International Law Commission 2007 – 2016 and a Special rapporteur for the topic Protection of the environment in relation to armed conflicts. Since her retirement continued to work as independent consultant on matters relating to international law, maritime and security matters. She holds a doctoral degree in international law from Lund University, Sweden, where she also is Associate Professor of International Law. She is a Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences and of the Royal Academy of Naval Sciences.
The World Maritime University (WMU) was founded in 1983 within the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, as its premier centre of excellence for maritime postgraduate education, research, and capacity development. Sweden is the host country for the WMU. The University is seated in Malmö.
Since its establishment, students from 171 countries have received a postgraduate education at the WMU.
In 2018, a new and independent institute - the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute - was inaugurated. It acts as an independent focal point for ocean-related dialogue and capacity-building. It engages at the interdisciplinary interface between science, policy, and law to address contemporary challenges in ocean governance and the Law of the Sea.
