Discourses of collaborative management research: A reflexive review

The language of collaboration in research – as a mutually beneficial exchange between academic and external partners who share, disseminate or coproduce knowledge – is increasingly widespread. However, better understanding is needed of how the language of collaboration shapes the knowledge that is produced. We contribute to filling this gap by reviewing the literature on collaborative research in management studies and analysing how it positions researchers. Drawing on the Swedish context where the language of collaboration is widespread, we explore how these discourses are used to regulate researcher identities. Through this, we seek to draw attention to the effects of transactional approaches to reciprocity in collaboration that position researchers as purposively-directed, self-interested social actors engaged in rational exchanges with practitioners. The article contributes to understanding the effects of linguistic conventions on methodological practices in management research and argues for greaterreflexivity and ethical awareness in collaborative research.

The seminar will be held in English.
