Design of chemical reagents for fast and sensitive detection of pesticides in water and food
This proposal addresses two focus areas of SUCCeSS: Sustainable food and water systems and Data driven circular and sustainable design. The sustainability goals put forward by the United Nations stress the need for clean and accessible drinking water and keeping the seas clean while still enabling industrial growth. The focus of this project is on sustainable development of chemical reagents for detection of glyphosate.

About the PI: Anneli Kruve, MMK
Professor Anneli Kruve, was selected as one of the Top 40 under 40 power list by the Analytical Scientist in 2018.
Anneli focuses on the fundamentals and applications of mass spectrometry. Specificially interested in (semi-)quantitative non-targeted analysis and applying ion mobility separation for complex structural characterization. About the PI: Miguel Rivero Crespo
Associate professor Miguel Riviero Crespo is a chemist working at the interface between organic chemistry, sustainable chemistry and materials science. The research is mainly focus on developing more efficient heterogeneous catalysts for reactions in organic chemistry with the goal of making organic chemistry more sustainable.
Forest materials: opportunities and obstacles for a circular economy in Sweden - FORCES
FORCES aims to assess opportunities and obstacles for forest materials as enablers of a circular economy. We will use our combined expertise in
- materials chemistry
- chemical and environmental regulation
- sustainability science
to explore and initiate new interdisciplinary research directions to support the continued development of sustainable and circular forest materials.
About the PI: Mika Sipponen, MMK
Associate Professor Mika H. Sipponen leads the Sustainable Materials Chemistry (SUSMATCHEM) research group at the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry. His research focus on on topics related to lignin chemistry and biomass processing, embracing industrially aligned multidisciplinary research.
About the PI: Marlene Ågerstrand, ACES
Associate professor Marlene Ågerstrand's reserach focus on understanding the science-policy interactions in risk assessment and management of chemicals. Aspects of interest include evaluation of data for use in decision-making, the efficiency of management options, and the role of experts in decision-making.

Researcher Tiina Häyhä's research focuses on developing approaches for operationalising the planetary boundaries framework for different sectors.
Safe water reuse in a changing environment, microbial degradation of contaminants in European rivers
Increasing water reuse is at the heart of Europe's climate change adaptation strategy to counter water scarcity. Sustainable and safe reuse is hampered by a complex mixture of contaminants that reach recipient waters due to their incomplete elimination in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
About the PI: Malte Posselt (ACES)
Reseracher Malte Posselt's research focus on organic pollutants in the aquatic environment. This includes pesticides, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals and many more.
