Research areas

Circular and Sustainable Processing

Research focuses on methodologies that enable circular and sustainable processing of chemicals, materials and products. We aim to reduce resource-use and waste-generation.

  • Less consumptive processes for CO2 neutral materials/chemicals/products
  • Benign-by-design material concepts for essential chemicals use
  • Use of CO2 as a raw material
  • Chemicals, materials and energy from biomass
  • Recycling/upcycling of waste and industry side streams
  • Resource efficient and zero waste synthesis and processing
  • Using and developing new methodologies for evaluating environmental foot-print
  • Environmental law and policy, standards related to circular processes

Data Driven Circular and Sustainable Chemistry

Research on the transdisciplinary development of sustainable systems with focus on:

  • Experimental data generation using high throughput automation platforms
  • Hazard and risk screening during processing/use /end-of-life
  • Machine learning for toxicity screening, organic chemistry and material design
  • Data management, data curation, data storage and data sharing and contributions to the development of data sets and standards.

The Circulab platform supported by WISE aligns with this vision.

Circular and Safe Food and Water Systems

Transdisciplinary research focuses on integrating system understanding, development and validation of safe and circular solutions for sustainable food and water, including blue economy.

  • Identifying new challenges in circular food and water systems
  • Sustainable water treatment solutions
  • Biomass management for food, feed, materials and energy
  • Circular nutrient flow, nutrient recovery
  • Sustainable pesticides and fertilizer use
