For teachers

As a teacher at Stockholm University, you can book information literacy sessions for your students. The library also offers a self-study course in Canvas that students can complete at their own pace. We are also responsible for purchasing course literature based on the reading lists sent to the library.

Information literacy instruction

The aim of the library’s teaching is to develop students’ ability to search for and evaluate scholarly information. Our teaching is primarily aimed at students writing a thesis or other academic work and need to be able to search for and evaluate academic literature independently.

Our teaching aims to ensure that students:

  • Are familiar with various search engines and databases
  • Are able to search effectively for academic literature
  • Are able to assess whether different sources are reliable and relevant
  • Are familiar with various tools that facilitate the writing of references

Book a teaching session for your students

To ensure we can offer teaching that meets students’ needs, we need information about the student group. This enables us to adapt the content so that it is relevant to the task at hand.

For an in-depth workshop, students can prepare by completing the library’s self-study course on searching for information in Canvas.

Please send your booking enquiry to kursbokningsub@su.se.

When booking a session, please provide the following information:

  • Course
  • Preferred focus areas for the session
  • Suggested dates and times (please provide several options)
  • Number of students
  • Location: in the library (max. 25 students), at the department or via Zoom
  • Should the session be held in Swedish or English?
  • Have the students completed the library’s self-study course prior to the session?
  • Please also attach the instructions for the relevant assignment or essay

The library's self-study course in Canvas

Give your students a better start when it comes to finding and using academic information. The library’s self-study course Better searches, better essays – finding the right research provides them with basic information-searching skills and consists of four sections featuring texts, videos and self-correcting quizzes.

The course provides practical tools for searching databases effectively, understanding the characteristics of academic texts and avoiding common pitfalls in information retrieval. Students also receive an introduction to reference tools that make working with sources and references easier.

If you have any questions absout the course you are welcome to contact us at kursbokningsub@su.se..

Submitting course reading lists to the library

Each department and course coordinator is responsible for informing the library about which textbooks are relevant before each semester.

Please send course literature lists to kurslitteratur.sub@su.se. The lists should clearly state which titles are new for the semester. This enables the purchasing procedure to go faster.

Unfortunately, the library does not have the opportunity to actively monitor sold-out titles on the course literature lists. But if we know that a previously sold-out book becomes available again, we will acquire it.

Students with a disability who need adapted course literature have access to their course literature through Legimus. You can make it easier for these students if you ensure that the literature list for the course is published well in advance of the course start. This means that all students have plenty of time if they need to order new talking books.
