Czech

Do you want to learn something different and intriguing? Studies in Czech provide access to a country with deep roots in European culture. The region today identified as the Czech Republic has often been considered a cultural bridge between the Western and Eastern parts of the continent.

Subject description

Czech is spoken by approximately 11 million people. After the so-called Velvet Revolution in 1989, the country has developed into a democracy with a growing economy, where many travel to study or work. With its beautiful nature and many well-preserved historic towns and edifices, it has also become a popular destination for tourists.

At Stockholm University, studies in Czech start at beginner’s level. After two semesters of full-time study, you will have the skills sufficient to converse with native speakers in everyday contexts, and be able to write and read with the help of a dictionary.

Throughout the bachelor’s programme, you will read Czech literature, practice translation, and learn about the history, culture and societal development of the Czech Republic. You will gradually be introduced to linguistic and literary theories and methods in preparation for writing your final thesis.

You will also have the opportunity to study Czech in the Czech Republic through one of the department’s exchange agreements with universities in Prague and Brno.
