Geography

About the subject

There has rarely been a time when so much happens – globally and locally. Climate change, conversion to more sustainable energy forms, migration flows, urbanization and globalization are both major challenges and opportunities. Geography and Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies handle issues like these in a broad interdisciplinary perspective.

Geography

Global and local changes take place at a rapid pace today. Are you interested in climate change, transition to more sustainable energy forms, various environmental problems, migration flows, urbanization and globalization – then geography is your topic! Issues such as these are studied historically and interdisciplinary, where natural science and social science are united. You get knowledge of the human life conditions in relation to, for example, food and water supply, land use, natural disasters and resource conflicts. Geography is connected to several other subjects, such as geology, biology, history and political science. You study the basics of physical and human geography, and you conduct field studies in different environments. After the basic courses you can deepen your knowledge in the topics you find most interesting, such as environmental studies, urban and regional planning, climate science, risk analysis, natural resource management and development issues, and geographical information systems.

Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies

Environmental problems are complex and broad analyses are required to identify potential solutions. Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies gives you the ability to understand and scientifically problematize the natural and social driving forces behind environmental problems. The topic covers various areas, such as environmental impact assessments, green infrastructure, sustainable social development, and much more.

Career opportunities

Globalization and other external processes have increased the societal demand for knowledge in geography and interdisciplinary environmental issues. With expertise from this education, you will also be attractive to consultancies, active in finance, tourism, environmental management and mass media. Furthermore, there is an increasing demand and use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and monitoring with satellite and aerial images.

Research

In the subject of Geography and Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies, we conduct research within and integrated between four different research units: Biogeography and Geomatics, Geomorphology and Glaciology, Hydrology, Water Resources and Permafrost, as well as Climate Science and Quaternary Geology. The research at the Department of Human Geography concentrates on three research profiles: The Stockholm Urban and Regional Research Environment (SURE), Historical Geography and Landscape Studies and Population Geography, Migration and GIS.
