Political Science

Are you interested in how politics work? Political science provides knowledge of key political issues and concepts. What is power? What is democracy? What is a citizen? You will learn about ideas, institutions, and processes in political theory, Swedish politics, comparative politics, and international politics.

Subject description

Many subjects within the humanities and social sciences are concerned with different aspects of political life and its institutions, that is, political science. Political scientists describe, explain and evaluate governance institutions and political behavior.

It is a broad topic with the main themes constituted by political theory, Swedish politics, comparative politics and international politics.

As a student you will gain basic knowledge about the political issues and processes in society, develop your ability to critically evaluate these, and gain practical insights into the working methods of the public sector. This knowledge is useful and applicable both in general terms as a citizen of society, and in more specific, professional contexts where knowledge of politics and public administration is valuable.

Career opportunities

The labour market for political scientists is broad, spanning both the public and private sectors. Students who have graduated from our programmes are now working as analysts in public or private studies or commissions of inquiry, equality consultants, communication officers, advisers, EU officials or political secretaries.

Common workplaces include government agencies, the Swedish Parliament, municipalities, embassies, private companies, and aid organisations.
