Subject description

If you are interested in languages and curious about different cultures, you can choose to study Portuguese. You start from scratch as a beginner and, as you train your language skills, you will notice that it goes pretty fast. In addition, you get a historical overview of culture and society in the countries where the language is official: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, Equatorial Guinea as well as East Timor and the Chinese city of Macau.

While you learn to communicate in Portuguese, you get the opportunity to understand how languages really work and how the communities where Portuguese is spoken are organized and why.

You will begin to recognize different dialects as you watch a Brazilian series or listen to an Angolan singer. When you have a good knowledge of the language, you will then be introduced to the research that is available in language and literature studies focusing on Portuguese. If you then become curious about a research problem that feels motivating, then you can write a scientific work that leads to a bachelor's degree with Portuguese as a major. If you want to go even further, you can deepen your knowledge at an advanced level, and this in turn leads to a master's degree.

Knowledge of Portuguese is in demand in the labor market. Trade and business, international organizations, tourism, media and journalism are some professional areas where knowledge of Portuguese is valuable. Some students in Portuguese choose to move on and continuing their studies as researchers in the subject of Portuguese.

To obtain a Bachelor's degree in Portuguese you can either study stand-alone courses or one of the programmes listed.
