Special Education

Do you want to develop your educational ability and create conditions for participation and learning for all? Special education deals with conditions for participation and learning from a social and organizational perspective and from a group and individual perspective.

Subject description

With an education in special education, you develop your ability to work with children, young people and adults in need of special support. You will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of creating the conditions for learning and good development for all.
 
Our education is based on research with a broad interdisciplinary basis. It takes place in the light of current education policy, the social situation of individuals, various functional impairments, diversity and gender.
 
In our courses and programs, you will get tools to analyze the risk situations of children and young people and how you and others can prevent such situations from occurring. The independent courses and programs are for at anyone who is interested in special educational issues.

Career opportunities

There is a great demand for people with knowledge in special education.
With special pedagogical competence, you can work with children, young people and adults in need of special support. You can also work on issues related to social justice and equality issues in pedagogical, social and special education activities.
 

Courses and programmes

  • PhD studies

    At the Department of Special Education, we, as the only university in Sweden, have a postgraduate education in Special Education. The education reflects the subject's interdisciplinary character, where 90 higher education credits consist of courses and 150 higher education credits consist of research for the thesis. Since 2018, we also have a Research in Special Education focusing on early efforts in learning environments in preschool and during the first school years.

Degree

A master’s degree in Special Education can only be obtained through enrolment in one of the master’s programmes listed under Educations within the subject.

Research

At the Department of Special Education, research is conducted on the basis of a variety of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches, which well reflects the interdisciplinary character that characterizes special education as a scientific subject.
 
The special education research deals with conditions for participation and learning from a societal, organizational, group and individual perspective. The focus is on investigating how educational environments can support or hinder development, learning and socialization in children and adults.
