"The mentorship programme exceeded my expectations"

Working on issues related to the welfare of children and young people is Kanwal Humayoon's goal. She applied for the mentorship programme to gain experience and improve her chances of getting a job after graduation. Looking back, she finds the programme rewarding in many ways.

Having worked as a teacher for many years, Kanwal felt she wanted to change her career path and return to university.

"I started studying the Master's programme in Public Health Sciences and then I applied for the mentorship programme. I wanted to connect with people working in my field to increase my chances of getting a job after my degree.”

Kanwal's goal is to work with issues related to the future and well-being of children and young people. She is currently doing her internship at the Choice Foundation, which works to improve the health of young people. An internship that was recommended to her by her mentor.

Motivation and commitment

“I didn't know what to expect from the mentorship programme when I signed up. But it has exceeded all expectations and I have received a lot of help and inspiration from my mentor!”

They met face-to-face about three times, communicating by Zoom, phone and email in between.

"My mentor was incredibly dedicated and gave me so many tips on how to improve my job prospects. I could ask her any questions I had, she helped me improve my CV and we discussed topics for my Master's thesis. My mentor was really motivated to help me, which made me want to learn from her more and more."

Rewarding in every way

Kanwal's advice to other students on the programme is to come prepared and think about what questions you want to ask, as the mentor cannot know what you need help with. When asked if she would recommend the programme to other students, Kanwal doesn't hesitate.

"Definitely! I hope all students are motivated to apply. The mentorship programme has been rewarding in every way - more than I expected!"
