Arabic with Middle Eastern and North African Studies V
In this course, the student deepens their knowledge of Arabic by reading and analyzing Arabic text.
The course also provides an introduction to the contemporary political landscape of the Middle East, geographical conditions, demographics and economics, as well as basic research design and research methodology.
Modules
Test analysis: Literary texts, 7.5 credits
In this module, the student deepens their knowledge in reading and analyzing fictional text in modern standard Arabic. The module deals with Arabic literature based on a specific theme and provides knowledge of the authors, genre and context of selected texts. The student also acquires knowledge in basic literary theory and method.
Research design and methods, 7.5 credits
This module provides an overview of the basics of research design and scientific methods. The student is also taught how to set up a plan for their own scientific study and how this is reported in a project description.
Text Analysis: Non-Fiction, 7.5 credits
In this module, the student deepens their knowledge in reading and analyzing non-fiction in modern standard Arabic. The course deals with a current theme through reading and analysis of a selection of Arabic sources.
Politics and Development in the Middle East, 7.5 credits
This course provides an introduction to the current landscape of the Middle East and North Africa’s political economy.
The course explores the geographic conditions, demography and cultural politics that shaped the last century of transformation in the region. It covers current societies from the perspective of research using gender as a medium of analysis, with particular focus on women's rights in the course of economic change since World War I.
Teaching Format
The teaching consists of lectures and seminars.
Attendance at all classes is mandatory.
The teaching takes place in Swedish and/or English according to the indication for each occasion for the course.
