Between History and Fantasy: Iraqi Myths, Folktales, Expressions & Proverbs

This course delves into the rich history of Iraq's cultural heritage and examines its myths and folktales as central elements of Arabic literature.

The course begins by exploring the transformation of oral traditions into literary forms, focusing on the transition “from myth to folktale”.

Students will explore ancient Mesopotamian mythology, including the Epic of Gilgamesh, and move towards understanding the role of proverbs and expressions in shaping Iraqi cultural identity. Through critical reading, discussion and comparative analysis, students will develop a deeper understanding of how these stories bridge history and imagination while reflecting societal values.
