Critical Sociolinguistic Approaches to Bi- and Multilingualism Studies

The course provides the opportunity to develop research skills to create new sociolinguistic knowledge in the field of bi- and multilingualism studies. It explores the historical trajectory of bi- and multilingualism research, and engages with contemporary approaches to studying language and power in globalized multilingual contexts.

The course provides theoretical and methodological tools for critically analysing and interpreting social meanings of multilingualism in institutional, private, and public spaces, and across a range of semiotic modes and media.



Teaching Format

  • Instruction is given in the form of lectures and seminars.
  • Attendance of seminars with oral presentations and at least 75% of the other teaching sessions is mandatory.
  • The language of instruction is English.
