Public governance

This course gives you an overview of theories on the role of the state and how it functions, examining both the normative and positive aspects of public involvement in society.

The course begins with a discussion on the need for government intervention in the private economy. It introduces essential analytical tools, such as basic contract theory, to explore topics like the optimal provision of public goods and the design of effective government regulations.

Beyond addressing the normative question of how governments should ideally function, the course delves into the realities of government operations. It includes key topics in Political Economics, such as electoral competition, partisan politics, and challenges related to political agency and political selection. To support these discussions, the course also reviews fundamental concepts of game theory.

This is a 7.5 credit course.
