Sustainable Finance

The overall aim of the course is to provide a thorough understanding of the most important advances in the central concepts of sustainable finance. The course is intended for those with proven knowledge in finance who want to deepen their knowledge of sustainability.

The course also involves advancing within broad financing topics such as corporate finance and asset pricing.

The course deals with the central concepts of sustainable finance. This topic stems from the fact that economic activity can create so-called external effects, or externalities, which occur when an economic transaction affects the benefit of a third party. In traditional economic theory, externalities are corrected by, for example, taxes (think carbon dioxide tax when it comes to carbon dioxide emissions).

Sustainable finance concerns issues such as considering environmental, social and corporate issues within this context. Overall, the subject aims to study how investment decisions both within companies and by external investors are influenced by these effects. It is fundamental to teach tools that make it possible to understand, identify and evaluate the trade-offs between profitability and its impact on society (or third parties).

The teaching consists of lectures, seminars and group work, and requires a significant portion of self-study on the part of the student.
The language of instruction is English.


Teaching Format

Teaching takes place on campus, supplemented with digital resources with the intention of generating the highest possible educational quality.


Assessment

Assessment for the course will be continuous and is carried out throughout the different course activities. Each assessment task is weighted in relation to its importance in the overall assessment of the course. The student’s results from the different assessment tasks are added up to a total course score that will then translate into the final grade for the course.

Assessment tasks

The course contains the following weighted assessment tasks:

  1. Group assignment: examines learning objectives 1–6; constitutes 25% of total course points.
  2. Oral presentation: examines learning objectives 1–6; constitutes 5% of total course points.
  3. Individual written exam: examines learning objectives 1–6; constitutes 70% of total course points.

The examination is conducted in English.


The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.


Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
