Culture and politics in contemporary France

The course deals with some current relevant topics in the light of France's historical, social and political development in modern times. Topics that may be studied are, for example, the secular state, the characteristics of the Fifth Republic, the (de)centralized state, post-colonial France, the image of France as a culture-bearing nation, French language policy, nationalism, the cultural imprint of feminism, etc. The course provides a deeper understanding of these phenomena by studying both texts and debates as well as controversies around these cultural phenomena.
