French III, Linguistics

French III, Linguistics is an advanced undergraduate-level course that builds on French II and provides students with a broader and more in-depth understanding of the French language from a linguistic perspective. The course combines theoretical studies in linguistics with further development of written language proficiency and prepares students for continued studies at the bachelor’s level.

The course French III, Linguistics (15 credits) follows the progression from French II and aims to provide in-depth knowledge of linguistics, with particular emphasis on the analysis of French-language material. The course has a clear academic focus and introduces key theories, concepts, and methods in linguistics. At the same time, students’ written language proficiency is further developed, with emphasis on academic French, idiomatic usage, and linguistic accuracy.

The course consists of two compulsory modules totalling 15 credits.

Modules

Modern French (7.5 credits) focuses on strengthening students’ written language proficiency through work on grammatical structures, vocabulary, and characteristic features of written French.
Linguistics II (7.5 credits) introduces some of the central branches and theoretical frameworks of linguistics and provides students with tools to analyse authentic French-language material using relevant concepts and methods.

Teaching Format

Teaching is conducted in French and takes the form of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and exercises.

Assessment

Assessment is conducted in French and consists of a total of four examinations. Modern French is assessed through one written examination. Linguistics II is assessed through one written examination and two oral examinations.
