Theoretical and Historical Perspectives On New Media

The media theoretical perspectives that are discussed can open up historical comparisons and parallels between today's media culture and media in other periods. During the course, current research on contemporary changes in the media and new media phenomena are studied. Special attention is paid to how digital media platforms and media formats challenge conventional understanding of the specificity of the film medium and representational strategies.
This course is also optional MA-level course for studentes in the Master's Programme in Cinema Studies.
For a passing result on the course, the student must be able to:
- explain, discuss and problematize, both orally and in writing, central concepts and theory building regarding the research field of the course;
- apply the theories and methods of the current research area in an independent scientific work.
Teaching Format
The teaching consists of: lectures and seminars as well as screenings of films and other media material. Mandatory attendance at lectures, seminars and film screenings. Teaching takes place in English.
