Environmental Management in Planning
Environmental issues are increasingly important in physical planning as they are complex, intertwined with other policy areas and require a broad analysis to identify potential solutions and different stakeholder perspectives. The course will give you knowledge about theory, methods and practice within physical planning with Swedish examples.
The course is part of Master's Programme in Environmental Management and Physical Planning but can also be read as a separate course.

Environmental issues in Physical Planning
The course unit covers, physical planning and as planning for environmental management and nature conservation as well as environmental impact assessment and strategic environmental assessment. The regulatory frameworks within the environmental and planning areas are covered, as is the planning roles of County Boards and municipalities.
Project
The course unit is composed of a project where the theoretical knowledge in environmental management in planning on a practical planning case.
Teaching Format
The education consists of lectures, seminars, exercises, project work and study visits.
Learning outcomes
After the course, students are expected to:
- describe methods and approaches used in handling environmental issues in planning
- apply relevant legislation and other regulatory measures for environmental management in planning
- independently seek relevant information on environmental aspects in planning
- analyse uncertainties, knowledge and values in environmentally directed planning
- carry out a written environmental planning investigation and orally present it.

Plagiarism and regulations for disciplinary matters
As a student you must be conscientious about clearly accounting for the material used in the texts that are submitted for examination. To use another person’s expressions or ideas without stating the source is plagiarism. To translate and/or change some words in someone else’s text and present it as your own is also a form of plagiarism. Plagiarism is considered cheating and if discovered in an exam or paper, the exam or paper will be failed immediately and disciplinary measures may be taken.
Any student who is caught cheating or disrupting academic activities may be suspended from lectures and exams for a period of up to six months. The Vice Chancellor or the Disciplinary Council decide whether the student is to be subject to any disciplinary measures.
