Applied geophysics

In the course you will learn the basics of the most common methods in geophysics and its applications in geology.

The course covers terrestrial geophysics and geophysical survey methods, and includes:

  • geophysical theory including gravity, magnetism, geo-electric properties, radiometric properties and seismicproperties
  • geophysical properties of rocks and planet Earth
  • function and use of geophysical instruments
  • geologic interpretation of geophysical data.

All teaching will be on campus except the fieldwork (in the end of the course).

A course page will be available at the course start.
We will have computer exercises. Please bring your own computer (and let me know if you are unable to do so).

The examination consists of a written exam and a field report. The course will be focused on geological applications of terrestrial geophysics, including the basic geophysical theory needed for understanding this topic.

The teaching consists of lectures and practicals, and 6-days of fieldwork (including a weekend). Separate detailed fieldwork schedule will be presented later.

The fieldwork will include cost of around 1600 kr per student for travel and accommodation.

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.

Course evaluations allow the possibility to affect and take responsibility for your own learning and gives important information for our work with pedagogical development.

It's important that all students complete the course evaluations after each course, it gives the Department the opportunity to improve the courses' quality.

The course evaluation is composed of a number of questions and specific questions for each course. If you, as a student, want to contribute with more course specific questions you may send them to studies@geo.su.se.

If you haven't received the course evaluation for your finished course, or if you have other questions regarding course evaluations at IGV please contact studies@geo.su.se.

Course evaluation = student's review of the course
Course report = course leader's reflections about the review
