East Asian history

The purpose of the course is to conceptually define East Asian history as a part of world history, moving from an earlier historiography dominated by a eurocentric view towards a more global view, which comprises intraregional perspectives on national identity and history as well as international relations.

The students are trained in critical analysis of Chinese, Japanese and Korean history (mostly modern history) and historiography, political rhetoric and debate on tradition versus modernization.

The course render and articulates non-Eurocentric perspectives on East Asian history and historiography.


Teaching Format

The instruction consists of seminars. Attendance at all instruction is obligatory.

Assessment

The course is examined on the basis of a written assignment in the form a take-home examination at the end of the course.

Examiner

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.


Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
