The Arts of the Japanese Stage

The course gives a general overview of the traditional arts of the Japanese stage. Representative genres in the theatre, dance and music are introduced from a historical perspective, and the influence of the Meiji period on estethics are discussed.

The course gives an overview of how different performing arts have developed. The focus is on medieval performing arts (noh) and the performing arts of the Edo period (Bunraku and Kabuki). It also covers certain music and dance genres that are not covered by these theatrical forms.

The course includes a number of compulsory film screenings.


Modules

The course consists of one module, 7.5 credits.

The course is given in the form of lectures and film screenings.

Attendance is mandatory.
