Japanese Popular Culture: Expression and Consumption

The course examines global and local conceptions of Japanese popular culture through the lens of anime/animation studies and games studies.

It questions the relevance of the very concept of ‘popular culture’ for the 21st century from the perspective of recent Japan-oriented media studies. It highlights issues that recur across popular media, such as playfulness, conventionality and critique, otaku, shōjo and kawaii.

The course contains 7.5 credits (ECTS).
