Korean Literature for Children and Young Adults
The course provides insights into the development of Korean children’s and young adult literature during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
The course focuses on contemporary South Korean literature, while also considering literary developments from the premodern and colonial periods in order to highlight various factors that contributed to shaping the distinctive characteristics of contemporary literature.
The course discusses cross-cultural and transnational influences and exchanges between Korean literature and world literature. This includes the intriguing question of the role Swedish children’s literature played in inspiring Korean authors to write for children, and how literature from the two countries has influenced one another in recent times. To develop a thorough understanding of these issues, selected works by individual authors from South Korea will be analysed in detail. For comparison, some representative works from North Korea will also be referenced.
Modules
The course consists of one module comprising 7.5 credits.
Teaching Format
Teaching consists of lectures and seminars. Attendance is compulsory.
Assessment
Assessment is based on a written take-home examination.
