Doing Art History

The aim of this course is to provide entry points to the field of art history within and outside academia. Through seminars and field studies in collections and archives, students will be able to examine critically and work independently with different categories of materials and research practices relating to art history.

The focus is on the ability to define and delimit the material and the object of study, as well as formulate relevant research questions on the selected material. Through practical exercises, students will develop their knowledge and skills relating to various forms of communication in art history, such as academic articles, oral conference presentations and exhibitions. The main emphasis of the course is on the “doing” of art history, but there are opportunities for specialisation and in-depth study of selected empirical data or a category of materials.



Teaching Format

Instruction is provided in the form of seminars and workshops, study visits and field studies, as well as project work. Attendance at all teaching sessions is mandatory. The language of instruction is English.


Assessment

The course is examined on the basis of oral presentations, written assignments, and reviews of other students’ project work.


The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.


Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
