Indigenismo - The rise, fall and artistic expressions of a political movement
In the course, you will get to know the discourses and projects of leading representatives of the indigenista movement for how to incorporate indigenous peoples into processes aiming at modernization, development and more inclusive nation-state formations.

A distinction will be made between liberal and Marxists strands of the movement. You will also analyze the responses from the indigenous peoples, particularly as they have been expressed by indigenous intellectuals and within a contemporary and increasingly politicized indigenous social movement sector. The course also zero in on the artistic expressions of indigenismo, that is, novels, poems and paintings.
Teaching Format
The course consists of seminars and lecturers. Presence at the seminars is mandatory. The teaching language is English. In the seminars, you are expected to contribute to the discussions. It is thus of central importance that you come to the seminars well-read on the literature announced in the reading instructions (these instructions will be distributed at the first lecture).
Assessment
The examination consists of three written essay assignments. The final grade will be based on the weighing together of these assignments.
