Inequality, Gender and Power in Latin America

Latin America has been described as a machist region, at the same time, it has become one of the regions of the world, where issues as the right for abortion and a feminist foreign policy exists in several countries. We focus on these themes as well as on income distribution

This course provides an introduction to the emergence of inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean, and traces continuity and change in the relations between gender, sexuality, class, ethnicity and ‘race’. These power relations are studied in the light of historical slavery and the development of the nation. In addition, the
course unit discusses how political movements in the region have taken on issues of power, inequality and change, as well as the challenges facing Latin America today with regard to the maintenance of human rights.

The overriding document for a course is the Syllabus. It can be found in the menu on the right. In this document, we clarify how we carry out the course in practice. The course description should provide good guidance, but is not comprehensive. Further clarifications in oral or written form are given by the teacher during the lessons. Do not hesitate to ask the teacher if any questions remain regarding the accomplishment of any task or assignment. Assessment

The course is examined by means 2-5 written assignments as well as oral presentations to be defended
during seminars.
