Language and Geography

This course provides advanced knowledge of human languages from a geographical perspective.

This course discusses

  • the spread and location of modern languages 
  • languages in different geographical entities, such as continents, countries, and cities
  • areal phenomena and the concept Sprachbund, how nature and culture can be considered to affect language.

The course also introduces geographical information systems (GIS) and tools for creating language maps.



Teaching Format

Instruction is given in the form of lectures and exercises.


Assessment

The course is examined through written assignments.
