Climate, Environment, and Energy – a Transdisciplinary Perspective

Explore climate, environment, and energy through natural science, social science, and humanities perspectives. Gain the skills to tackle environmental challenges and contribute to sustainable solutions.

In this course, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of climate, environment, and energy by integrating insights from natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. They will learn to analyze complex systems, explore interdisciplinary perspectives, and apply transdisciplinary methods to generate knowledge. After completing this course, students will be equipped to critically engage with environmental challenges and contribute to sustainable solutions.

This course consists of five modules. The first module (Systems Thinking) uses the concept of systems to set the stage for interdisciplinary learning. The second, third and fourth modules examine climate, environment and energy from natural science, social science and humanities perspectives. The fifth module (Creating Knowledge Through Transdisciplinary Methods) introduces transdisciplinary learning.

    Modules

    • Systems Thinking (3 ECTS): Analyse complex problems through an interdisciplinary framework.
    • Natural Science Perspective (9 ECTS): Explore climate systems, energy processes, and ecosystem interactions.
    • Social Science Perspective (9 ECTS): Delve into the policy, governance, and economic aspects of sustainability.
    • Humanities Perspective (6 ECTS): Reflect on the ethical, cultural, and historical dimensions of environmental challenges.
    • Transdisciplinary Methods (3 ECTS): Go a step further and engage with innovative research methods involving collaboration and community-driven approaches.

    This course is the first course on the Master's Programme in Transdisciplinary Studies of Climate, Environment and Energy and can not be taken as a freestanding course.
