Methodology II

Mandatory course in Master´s Programme of Global Media Studies and Master's programme in Journalism Studies. Only students within the program can register to this course.

From Fall 2026

The course is the second of three methodology courses within the department's master's programs in Journalism Studies and Global Media Studies. Teaching provides in-depth methodological knowledge in qualitative research, providing an understanding of the ontological and epistemological foundations of qualitative research. It also addresses ethical perspectives in qualitative research and explores the relationship between qualitative and quantitative research in the field.

Students evaluate their own applications of qualitative methods, conducting data collection, interpretation, and analysis of production processes, content, or media practices.


Teaching takes place in English in the form of lectures, seminars and workshops. Attendance and participation at seminars and workshops are course requirements.

For a passing result on the course, the student must be able to:-    

- Explain the epistemological foundations of qualitative research methodology in journalism and media research.
- Critically analyze and reflect on qualitative methods, including their strengths and limitations.
- Discuss ethical considerations and challenges, as well as explain how research quality can be assessed and maintained in qualitative research.
- Apply various qualitative research methods used in journalism and media research and assess their value and relevance for different types of studies.


Teaching Format

Teaching is conducted in English through lectures, seminars, and workshops. Attendance and active participation in seminars and workshops are mandatory course requirements.

 


Assessment

The course is examined through a written exam (sit down exam)

Examiner

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.


Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
