Demographic data analysis

This advanced-level course is for students interested in population issues such as fertility, mortality and migration.

Demographic Data Analysis aims to develop students' analytical and interpretative skills through hands-on work with demographic data and methods. Students will analyze, present and interpret demographic data using essential methods including life tables (cohort and period), standardization techniques, Lexis diagrams, fertility and migration measures, and population forecasting. Such analytical skills are essential for work with statistical materials on populations and will be valuable for most quantitative social science research. As the course is based on the idea of learning by doing, attendance is essential to attain the learning outcomes.

Teaching Format

The course is provided at full-time basis over five weeks. Teaching and learning is conducted through lectures, seminars, lab and home exercises, and a final exam.

Assessment

The assessment consists of eight individual assignments and one individual exam, each to be submitted at a specific deadline. Assignment eight is carried out in the lab with compulsory attendance.
