Introduction to Quantitative Research Design
The difference between observational and experimental studies is discussed, as well as selection issues and the counterfactual problem. The possibility of generalising the results of a research study to other contexts is addressed. The link between theory and research design is clarified. The focus of the course is on evaluating published research results, especially with regard to the link between the research question and the research design. Research-related ethical issues will also be addressed.
An important feature of the course is to increase interaction among students and promote co-operation. Group work is part of the course and its examination, and participation in group work/discussions is mandatory. Group work is used, among other things, in course assignments and in the discussion of scientific articles.
Teaching Format
The course is offered full-time over 5 weeks. Course participants and instructors meet approximately twice a week for lectures, group discussions or seminars.
Assessment
Course assignments are assessed through documented group discussions, individual course assignments and written and oral summaries of journal articles based on empirical studies. Group work is part of the course and its examination and participation in group work/discussions is mandatory.
