Environmental Politics: Governing the Anthropocene from Local to Global

This course studies the politics of environmental problems and aims to give participants an advanced overview of contemporary scholarly work on a wide range of environmental topics. It explores key theoretical approaches and analytical frameworks that shape our understanding of how environmental issues are addressed across different levels of governance.

Students will analyze the roles and interactions of state and non-state actors, the influence of markets and institutions, and the diverse policy instruments employed to tackle environmental challenges. The course also critically engages with questions of accountability and legitimacy in environmental decision-making processes. Toward the end of the course, attention will turn to selected thematic areas, such as the environment–security nexus, environmental justice, and gender perspectives in environmental governance.

The teaching consists of seminars.

The course is examined by two take-home examinations (memos).
