Teaching and learning languages other than English (LOTE)

An interdisciplinary course that provides insight into the latest research findings on teaching and learning languages other than English (LOTE).

The course covers basic theories and research methods in the learning and teaching of languages other than English (LOTE). It is interdisciplinary and provides insight into the latest research findings in the field. During the course, research articles on selected topics e.g. teaching of LOTE, motivation, multilingualism, interlinguistic influence, cultural learning, and language policy are read and discussed. Students will also reflect on their linguistic repertoire and language learning processes based on the theoretical perspectives covered in the course.

The course is offered in collaboration with all departments at the Department of Slavic and Baltic Languages, Finnish, Dutch and German. It is useful for all professions and employments where knowledge of teaching and learning languages other than English is required or is a competitive advantage. It is suitable for students at an advanced level in language subjects as well as for professional teachers at all levels.

Teaching Format

Instruction is in the form of seminars. Attendance is mandatory. The language of instruction is English.

Assessment

Assesment consists of continual examination through short written assignments in connection with each seminar, a shorter essay and a oral presentation.

Examiner

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
