German Grammar and Linguistics

The German Grammar and Linguistics course provides in-depth knowledge of the German language. It covers German grammar with an emphasis on syntactic structures and introduces German linguistics.

The course is a freestanding module of the German II course and is a continuation course of the German I course.

The course consists of two modules.

Modules

Introduction to German Linguistics, 3 credits

This module covers basic linguistic areas, language acquisition research, and selected stages in the development of the German language from Old High German to modern times.

German Grammar, 4.5 credits

This module covers German grammar with an emphasis on written syntactic structures.

Teaching Format

Teaching consists of (recorded) lectures, seminars, and (group) exercises.

Instruction is conducted in German.


Assessment

The examination is conducted in German.

Introduction to German Linguistics, 3 credits

This module is examined through a written assignment in the form of a take-home exam.

Grammar, 4.5 credits

This module is examined through a written exam.


The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.


Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
