Credit transfer

If you believe your previous studies or professional experience correspond to a course or programme at Stockholm University you can apply for a credit transfer. You must have been admitted to and study at Stockholm University in order to be able to apply for a credit transfer. This may involve replacing a specific module or programme or optional course (credits) in your degree.

The Higher Education Ordinance regulates the right to transfer credits from previous studies or prior professional experience. In order to be able to apply for a credit transfer, you must have been admitted to and study at Stockholm University.

A credit transfer may impact any further studies and your right to student finance. Transferred courses or credits are not graded. Thus, it is important that you consider the purpose of the credit transfer before applying.

Previous studies from a Swedish higher education institution do not always have to be transferred. However, you always need to apply for a credit transfer for credits obtained from higher education studies abroad and for professional experience.

Read more about what applies to credit transfer in different types of degrees below. If you have questions or need guidance, please contact a study counsellor or the Degree Office.

Regulations and procedure for credit transfer

To apply for a credit transfer, you must have been admitted to and study at Stockholm University.

Compulsory courses

If you want to transfer credits for specific courses in your main field of study or compulsory courses for your future degree, you must apply to the department coordinating the course. They will assess the application and take a decision on the credit transfer.

Sometimes, courses in your main field of study taken at other Swedish higher education institutions may be included in your degree without needing to apply for a credit transfer. Contact a study counsellor at the department coordinating the course to find out what applies to you.

You will always need to apply for a credit transfer for previous studies abroad, non-university courses, and professional experience. Contact a study counsellor at the department coordinating the course to find out what applies to you.

When you apply for credit transfer for knowledge and experience from previous professional experience or other education, this is assessed through a validation process. In the validation process, your knowledge and experience are mapped and assessed by the institution responsible for the education to which the credit transfer applies. In your application for credit transfer, you must describe in detail the knowledge and skills you have acquired and explain how they correspond to the expected learning outcomes in the course syllabus. As far as possible, the descriptions must be supported by certificates, diplomas or similar documentation. Supplementary tests or interviews may be required. Keep in mind that validation can be a lengthy process, so submit your application well in advance of your study plan so that you can plan your future studies in the best possible way.

You must attach the following documents to your application:

  • Self-assessment/competence description (contact the department for the Self-assessment form).
  • Other documents that substantiate your competence.
  • Any certificates from employers.
  • Employer and contact details for your immediate manager.
  • Length of employment.
  • Scope of work (full-time or part-time, etc.).
  • Description of work duties.

For both studies and professional activities, you may be asked to present original documents and supplement with additional documentation if necessary for your application to be processed.

Processing and decision

Once your application has been received, it will be assessed to determine whether your previous qualifications correspond to courses at Stockholm University. You will receive a written decision stating whether your application has been granted in full or in part, or rejected.

Processing times can vary. It generally takes no longer than two months to process a complete application. A decision on credit transfer can be appealed.
