Erasmus+ traineeship abroad
Are you interested in doing a traineeship abroad? As a student at Stockholm University you can apply for an Erasmus+ grant for an internship or work placement at an organization, enterprise, education or research centre abroad, in one of the Erasmus+ programme countries.
On this page, you will find more information about the different types of internships and how to apply.
Different internships
There are different types of Erasmus+ traineeships. The traineeship can be:
- Embedded in the curriculum, as part of your study programme, in the form of an internship or degree project course.
- Voluntary traineeship, e.g. as summer internship, outside your regular study programme, but before graduation.
- Recent graduate, after you completed your studies at Stockholm University. To take part in Erasmus+ traineeship recent graduate, you need to apply during your final semester/course at Stockholm University, before graduation. The Erasmus+ traineeship must take place within 12 months after graduation. If you already completed your studies and applied for your degree certificate you are no longer eligible to apply.
Erasmus+ traineeship requirements
To be eligible to participate in Erasmus+ traineeship you need to fulfil the following requirements:
- Be a registered and active student at Stockholm University at the time of application. This means that you need to be registered and participating in an ongoing course at the time of application.
- You intend to graduate at Stockholm University (does not apply to “recent graduate”)
- Have an eligible internship/traineeship/work placement and get it approved by your home department
- Will do a full-time traineeship/internship at an eligible organization, in an eligible country, according to your Learning Agreement for Traineeship, for a minimum of 60 days, but no more than 360 days per education cycle (bachelor, master or PhD level)
- Not been on an Erasmus+ mobility before during the same study cycle so that the total mobility period exceeds 360 days (previously and planned mobility)
- Get the Erasmus+ traineeship recognized by your home department (higher education credits, or at least by a note in the diploma supplement - doesn’t apply to “recent graduate”)
- Sign a Grant Agreement before departure
- Submit Arrival Certificate, Traineeship Certificate and Erasmus+ Participant report during and after the mobility.
- Not accept any other scholarships from the EU or the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) at the same time.
Additional requirements for short blended mobility for individuals
The target group for short blended mobility is students who cannot participate in a longer mobility, for example because of limitations in the study programme or for other personal reasons such as children in the household.
To be eligible to participate in a short blended traineeship you need to meet the general Erasmus+ traineeship requirements in addition to:
- The traineeship needs to contain a physical mobility, in the host country for 5-30 days.
- The traineeship needs to contain a virtual component organised by the host organisation that enhances the learning outcomes and has a clear result.
- The complete mobility should correspond to at least 3 ECTS.

Erasmus+ programme countries
You can do an Erasmus+ traineeship in one of the following countries:
Member states of the European Union*, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Türkiye.
*Including: outermost regions (OR’s) and overseas countries and territories.
The United Kingdom and Switzerland are not participating in the Erasmus+ programme period 2021-2027. It is therefore not possible to apply for scholarships funds for Erasmus traineeship in the United Kingdom and Switzerland.
Eligible host organisations
Companies, organizations, education or research centers in the public or private sector. Embassies, consulates and representations (Swedish ones included) within the EU and the political parties within the European Parliament maybe hosts, with exception for EU institutions and other EU bodies or organisations managing EU-programmes (such as National Agencies).
If you are planning to do you your traineeship at a Higher Education Institutions abroad, it should be clear that it is for work, not studies. You should not be enrolled as student at the host university. If the traineeship can be transferred, it must transfer as a traineeship and not as a regular course.
The following organizations are not approved as traineeship host:
EU organizations dealing with EU programmes, such as the National Agencies, are not approved as internship hosts. However, the political parties' offices at the European Parliament are not seen as part of the European Parliament and are therefore approved.
If you wish to carry out an internship at an EU institution, you can do so outside the Erasmus+ programme.

Traineeship outside Europe with Erasmus+
During the spring semester 2025, we are offering a limited number (10) of grants for SU students who, within the framework of their study programme, carry out an internship outside of the European Union.
Erasmus+ traineeship grant
Students who meet the requirements for Erasmus+ traineeships may apply for funding via Erasmus+. Applications need to be submitted to the International Office - Student Services at least 6 weeks before the intended traineeship period. Scholarships will not be granted for traineeships that have already started.
Applications can be submitted continuously, as long as there is funding available, with exception for the summer vacation. No applications will be accepted/processed during the period 1 June – 31 July. Apply in good time before the start of the traineeship!
The grant amount is based on the country you are doing the work placement and length of your mobility. Note that you are only eligible for an Erasmus+ grant for the days you participate in physical mobility in the host country, not if you work remotely from Sweden or from another country than your host country.

Grant amount for short blended mobility (5-30 days)
The grant is based on the number of days of the physical mobility including one travel day before and one travel day after the mobility period if needed. Travel days on the first or last day of the mobility are not counted as travel days. The grant is only granted for the physical part of the mobility.
- 79 EUR per day until and including the 14th day
- 56 EUR per day from the 15th day (maximum 30 days)
Grant payment
The grant will be paid in two instalments. In a first payment 70 percent of your total grant amount will be paid, at the beginning of the mobility. Once you have successfully completed the traineeship and submit/completed the required documentation, the second part of the grant will be paid. In case of changes to the originally planned mobility period, the final grant amount may be adjusted.
Support for Erasmus students with children
Students who have minor children and are participating in an Erasmus Traineeship, can receive an extra top-up added to the original grant amount and regardless of whether the child accompanies the student during the traineeship abroad or not.
- Semester long mobility (60-360 days): A top-up of 250 EUR/month
- Short term mobility and short blended mobility including BIP (5-30 days): A top-up of 100 EUR for mobilities with a duration of 5-14 days and 150 EUR for mobilities with a duration of 15-30 days
You apply for the top-up for children in the Erasmus grant application where you also upload a family certificate from the Tax Agency.
Students who have minor children and are participating in an Erasmus exchange and where the extra costs because of this exceeds the amount of the top-up can apply for up to 100 percent coverage for actual costs. Support for Erasmus students with a disability
Students participating in an Erasmus Traineeship with long-term disabilities, including disabilities caused by physical or psychological illness can receive an extra top-up added to the original grant amount.
- Semester long mobility (60-360 days): A top-up of 250 EUR/month
- Short term mobility and short blended mobility including BIP (5-30 days): A top-up of 100 EUR for mobilities with a duration of 5-14 days and 150 EUR for mobilities with a duration of 15-30 days
Students apply for the top-up for disability in the Erasmus grant application and will thereafter be contacted with more information on mandatory documentation.
If there are extra expenses during the exchange, due to disability, not covered by the top-up, students can apply for up to 100 percent coverage of actual costs. Expenses may include additional costs that the student or the host organisation may have that are not covered in another way. This can for example be transportation, teaching aids, special accommodation, assistants, or medical assistance in the country of the students host university.
Students who wish to apply for funding for extra expenses due to disability should contact their International Coordinator or the Erasmus team at the International Office as soon as possible for more information on how to apply.
Checklist for students with a disability going on an exchange
Green Travel
Environment and fight against climate change is one of the priorities of the new Erasmus+ programme 2021-2027. Students starting an Erasmus+ traineeship in 2022 can apply for a one-time top-up of 50 EUR for green travel, if they travel in a more sustainable way (e.g. train, buss, car-pooling) to and from the host destination. In addition, you can receive funding for up to two travel days before and after the traineeship period, if needed.
You apply for the top-up for green travel in your Erasmus grant application.
Criteria for top-up for green travel:
- You will travel in an environmentally friendly way to and from the host country; for instance, you can travel by train, bus or carpool (at least 2 people). Please note that travelling by ferry does not count as green travel.
- After the end of the mobility you ned to provide documentation showing that you have travelled in a sustainable way to and from the host country.
- If you travel by carpooling, you need to submit a confirmation form that be downloaded from the Erasmus+ portal.
- Travel days are only granted for travel before the start date and after the end date stated in your Traineeship Certificate.
- Granted travel days are not counted as part of the mobility period i.e. cannot be counted as part of the minimum requirement of 60 days mobility in order to keep the scholarship.

Insurance
As student at Stockholm University, you are covered by the insurance Student OUT via Kammarkollegiet during your Erasmus+ traineeship abroad. The insurance Student OUT is free of charge and applies from two weeks before to two weeks after the mobility period within the host country.
It is recommended that you read through the terms and conditions of the insurance on Kammarkollegiet's website, to check if additional insurance coverage is required.
If you are traveling within the EU or EEA you should also bring a valid European Health Insurance Card, which can be ordered at www.forsakringskassan.se.
