General rule and exemptions from paying the tuition fee

General criteria

Generally, individuals with citizenship in a country outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland (hereafter "citizens of a third country") are required to pay an application fee as well as a tuition fee. There are some exceptions to this general rule. A full list of exemption criteria is available on the website of University Admissions in Sweden.

Determining the tuition fee status

The status fee-paying or exempted is determined for each student when the application is done on University Admissions. Be sure to document your citizenship or resident status within the relative deadlines.

Change of the tuition fee status

A tuition fee is charged for those who are citizens of a third country at the start of the course or study programme and who are considered liable to pay fees during their studies. A student declared to be liable to pay fees can, following a review, be declared not to be liable to pay a tuition fee if he or she fulfils one or more of the exemption criteria. The students are responsible for notifying the University when they are no longer liable to pay fees. The change of fee status is not made for an ongoing semester.

If you would like to have your tuition fee status reconsidered based on new circumstances that meet the requirements for exemption, please submit a scan of the supporting documents to your application on University Admissions.

  • If you have a residence permit based on other grounds than studies: submit a scan of a valid residence permit card and the decision on which it is based
  • If your residence permit has expired: submit your most recently valid residence card and the decision on which it is based as well as the receipt of your application for an extended residence permit.

Send an email to study@su.se. The tuition fee team will then re-assess your fee status and notify you of the outcome by email.
The change of fee status is not made for an ongoing semester.

A student that has been exempted from paying the tuition fee for a specific course or programme will remain exempt for the entire course or all subsequent semesters of the programme, unless the basis for the original decision was incorrect.
