Canvas replaces Athena as the new learning platform from Autumn Term 2026
From the Autumn term 2026, Stockholm University will use Canvas as its new learning platform for all education and course administration.
Canvas is designed to be easy for students to use – course materials, timetables and submissions are brought together in one place. You log in with your university account and will find your courses in the new environment when the term begins.

For you as a student, this means that you will use Canvas from Autumn term 2026. The learning platform is already used by more than 30 Swedish universities and higher education institutions, and many students at Stockholm University already have experience of Canvas from previous studies. Students who have taken part in pilot courses at Stockholm University have been overwhelmingly positive about the new digital learning environment. Canvas is easy to navigate, and the mobile app has been particularly appreciated by many.

The transition itself does not involve any changes to course content, examinations or course syllabuses – only the digital learning platform is being replaced. In Canvas, all course content is gathered in one place. Here you will find course materials, assignments, submissions, messages and information from your teacher. The platform is designed to be clear and easy to navigate, both on a computer and via the mobile app.

Ahead of the start of term, information and support materials will be made available to help you get started. You will be able to log in to canvas.su.se with your university account from August. Courses will only become visible once you are registered on them and the course has been published by the teacher ahead of the start of term on 31 August. If you have not studied at Stockholm University before, you will need to obtain a university account before you can log in.

The aim of the implementation is to create a modern and long-term sustainable digital learning environment with good accessibility that works for all students.

The current learning platform, Athena, will be phased out during 2026. After the summer, no new courses will be started in Athena. All courses beginning in the Autumn Term 2026 will be delivered in Canvas. Courses that started in the Spring Term 2026 and summer courses will be able to continue in Athena until they are completed (does not apply to programmes).

  • Plagiarism control
  • Extensions for digital accessibility such as speech synthesis, increased contrast, and text size.
  • Possibility to give students extra time due to needs, breaks or incidents.

Privacy

Stockholm University shares information with Inspera to make it possible for you as a student to complete digital exams. We only share necessary information with Inspera to be able to complete the exam in the tool.

What information we share with Inspera is governed by the laws and regulations governing higher education and the rules that apply to exams at Stockholm University

An anonymization code is transferred from Ladok to be able to link the exams you have registered for via Ladok to the correct exam in Inspera. This is necessary information for you to be able to complete the exam.

While you are logged into Inspera to complete the exam, your name is shared with Inspera so that exam hosts can check that the right student completes the exam. When you log out of Inspera, this information is removed.

When the exam is assessed, your result is transferred from Inspera to Ladok. The result is linked to you in Ladok using your anonymization code.
In accordance with SU's rules, the exam is deleted after two years. This also applies to Inspera.
