The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, also known as UIUC or Illinois, is a public research university in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. Founded in 1867, the university is today a highly respected institution in the United States known for its excellence in many different research fields, including mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry, as well as its state-of-the-art research facilities and renowned research centres.

UIUC's large and beautiful campus has many resources for students, such as parks, housing, libraries, study areas, dining halls, and training facilities. Student life at UIUC is lively and engaging, with many activities and opportunities to meet new people. There are also sports events and concerts held on campus, such as the famous Illini football matches.

Illinois is a destination that offers many unforgettable experiences. You can discover amazing natural areas through hiking or camping, such as at Starved Rock State Park. In Chicago (Illinoi’s largest city) it is possible to enjoy a rich cultural offering in art, theatre, and music, as well as experience a vibrant nightlife with live music and good food. For sports fans, there are many opportunities to watch exciting American football and baseball matches. 

 

How to apply

Your application should include the following:

  • Completed application form.
  • A personal letter in English describing who you are and why you want to go on exchange.
  • A letter of recommendation from a person at your home institution who can describe why you are a suitable representative for Stockholm University, both personally and academically.

Call for applications

For exchange studies in the fall semester of 2024 or the academic year of 2024/2025, send your application by February 15, 2024 at 23:59. All relevant documents will be filed.

 

Courses you can take during the exchange

The Faculty of Science primarily has exchanges with The School of Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB), which offers educational programs in areas such as cell and molecular biology, neuroscience, and biochemistry. Examples of courses you can take there include drug development, cell signalling, and genetics. One semester corresponds to 15 credits at the undergraduate level and 12 credits at the graduate level. However, there are opportunities to take courses outside of MCB.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to apply, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be registered as a student at Stockholm University in natural sciences. Priority is given to students in biology and chemistry.
  • Have at least 15 credits from Stockholm University documented in Ladok by the application deadline. Credits recognized from another institution are not included.
  • Have studied for at least one year before departure.
  • Be able to have your credits recognized after the exchange. You should agree with the exchange coordinator (or equivalent) at your institution on a preliminary selection of courses that can be credited before applying.
  • Intend to obtain a degree from Stockholm University.
 

Selection criteria

The applications are assessed based on the following criteria:

  • Complete application. In the first instance, students who have submitted a complete application on time are nominated. Incomplete application documents and/or supplements are handled if there is space.
  • Previous exchange studies. Students who have not participated in exchange studies at Stockholm University before have priority. You cannot be nominated to an institution where you have previously been an exchange student.
  • Suitability. We assess your suitability as an ambassador for Stockholm University and your ability to adapt to the foreign environment based on your personal letter and letter of recommendation.
  • Study results. We look at the number of completed credits in the last two years in relation to the number of credits the student has been registered for. If the previous criteria are not sufficient to make a selection, we also look at grades for courses in natural sciences.
