“I found solace in science”

Liam is a second-year master's student from Ireland. He has always been fascinated by the prospect of demystifying the building blocks of the mind and using this acquired knowledge to help others in some way. Watch the film and read the text below to get to know his story.

“There is this hopeless quote that goes around, that says something like ”we're born too late to explore our planet and we’re born too early for the stars”, so that leaves us kind of in a helpless middle ground where we have nothing, and we're just waiting for the next stage of human evolution or something like that. But I feel like we don't have to look too far to find some exploration and adventure; all we have to do is to look within ourselves. I think there's a lot to uncover and discover about the minds, and that I think it's insanely fascinating. We do not know much about our brain and I think that the more we learn the more we know we don't know as well, and it feels like we are pioneers.

I was raised by my grandparents and I remember my grandmother was really forgetful and we were joking all the time about her needing a new brain, and that I had to help fix it for her. And I like to think this is part of what fascinated me with neurosciences.

I come from a place in the west of Ireland called Galway, a place renowned for its cultural festivals, music and openness. I went to university and studied biochemistry there, but I always had a broad interest in different fields. I found it quite difficult to narrow what I wanted to do. But it was science what drove my curiosity a bit more, and science was what scratched and itched my brain -- to keep learning, to keep going. I studied physics, chemistry, biology, but at the end I guess I went for neuroscience because it is about humans. And you can learn about yourself, and about us. About people.”
